The
following is an updated status report for the Alabama State Port
Authority terminals at the Port of Mobile:
Channel: The Mobile Ship
Channel is now open to 43 ft. draft
and we have returned to two-way, 24
hour vessel movement. The hopper dredge Columbia is
working in the ship channel, but due to extensive shoaling in the upper
bay, it will take time to restore the Mobile Channel to 45 ft. draft.
The Corps is exploring means to expedite the dredging, and
we anticipate a minimum 30 days for full depth restoration to be
complete.
General Cargo Terminals: Our
warehouses have been fully cleaned and have resumed normal cargo
operations.
Pier 2 Container Terminal: We
are receiving and delivering containers at our Pier 2 container
terminal. While our cranes were not damaged, we did have damage to the
on-board electronics in the reach stackers. We have two yard machines
working and we are taking delivery of additional container machines.
The new equipment will be operational by Monday and repairs to our three
damaged stackers are expected to be completed soon. The Authority
expects to be fully operational with more capacity in about a week.
Phone Service at the Port:
We continue to experience intermittent telephone and cell service. Most
numbers are reliable, but additional contact information can be found at
www.asdd.com.
Truck Control:
Our truck control office, which was flooded during the storm, is
relocating today into a temporary portable office. Phone service
remains spotty, but we have activated a cell phone for Truck Control
users. The ASPA Truck Control temporary number is (251-422-7120) or by
email at
TruckControl@asdd.com.
The Alabama State Port Authority at
the Port of Mobile is steadfastly returning to normal operating
conditions. James K. Lyons, director and CEO of the Authority, said
“Our quick recovery from Katrina’s damages is due primarily to the
efforts of our employees and service providers. They’ve done a great
job and we are extremely appreciative of their actions under such
adverse conditions.” Smitty Thorne, vice president of operations also
expressed “the staff’s deep appreciation of the concern, patience and
assistance provided by our port users and the maritime community as we
worked through clean up and repairs.” |
